
Fundamentals of Equine Assisted Therapy 2026
A 35-hour CPD experiential course for Mental Health Professionals
Red Horse Foundation is a specialist centre for Equine Assisted Therapy (EAT) in the UK and has delivered full-time equine assisted therapeutic work to a wide range of client groups since 2010. The Fundamentals of Equine Assisted Therapy course is now in its sixth year.

This immersive programme offers 35+ hours of onsite learning with our established herd of six therapy horses, combining theoretical foundations with hands-on experiential practice.
Participants will work closely with the herd each week, integrating learning through direct observation, reflection and guided therapeutic engagement.
​
Following successful completion of the course, participants are offered ongoing support, including individual supervised practice, available both onsite and online, tailored to individual professional needs.

Course Overview
This course provides a comprehensive introduction to the field of Equine Assisted Therapy and explores the range of approaches currently operating under the wider umbrella of Equine Assisted and Equine Facilitated Therapies.

Participants will explore:

The horse–human connection

Non-verbal communication between horse, therapist and client

The therapeutic triad and relational dynamics unique to EAT
​​
You will learn how to invite horses as co-therapists within a therapeutic framework, developing the skills required to work within this unique and evolving relational dynamic.
The course emphasises how the sensory and relational presence of the horse can be integrated as a primary therapeutic resource, alongside established clinical practice.

With the guidance of our experienced team and the support of the Red Horse herd, participants will examine:

The role of the horse within the therapeutic process

How horses offer themselves in relationship

How they can support clients in accessing unconscious material with clarity and safety

Participants will gain an understanding of how equine assisted therapy can support clients in making positive, meaningful and conscious changes, fostering healthier and more respectful relationships with themselves and others.

Experiential Learning
In addition to professional training, this course offers a personal journey of discovery, as participants practise and reflect alongside our four-legged partners.
